Concepts of the Internet

Internet
The internet is a public, global (wide area) network based on TCP/IP protocols. The TCP/IP protocol assigns every connected computer a unique Internet address also know as IP address, so that they can locate each other on the network and locate data.
Intranet
A private computer network design to meet the needs of a single organization or company that is based on TCP/IP.
Extranet
A intranet or a part of an intranet that have been selectively opened to strategic allies (such as customers, suppliers, research associates) to remotely access and/or edit information. For example on-line banking application.

Internet Concepts/Protocols

Protocol
An agreed set of rules that specifies the format of data as well as the rules to be followed to transmit it
TCP
Transmission control protocol.
IP
Internet protocol.
HTTP
Hyper Teaxt Transfer Protocol. A protocol used to request and transmit files, especially web pages and web page components, over the Internet or other computer networks.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol. A protocol used to transfer files between FTP servers and clients
VoIP
Voice over IP. Is the use of Internet based technologies to transmit voice-grade data over the internet.

World Wide Web (WWW) Concepts

HTML
Hyper Text Markup Language. A programming language that is used to create web pages.
Web page
A document written in HTML that may contain text, sounds, images, video clips, hyperlinks and other components.
Web site
A group of web pages that belong together and are linked to each other using hyperlinks.
Hyperlink
Is a icon, information object, underlined or otherwise emphasized word or phrase that displays another document (or resource) when clicked with the mouse.
Web Server
A special-purpose application software that accepts requests for information, processes these requests and sends the requested document(s).
Web Browser
A special-purpose application software that runs on an Internet-connected computer/devices and uses the HTTP to connect with web servers.
URL
Uniform resource locator. A string of characters that uniquely identifies and internet resource's type and location. Consider the following URL:
  • http:// - Identiefies the transfer protocols
  • www - Identifies the documents is accessable via the world wide web
  • newegg.com - Indicates the domain name and type of the computer on which the document is stored
  • /products/monitors/HpM.html - Fully describes the directory structure (where the document is stored) and includes the document name and extension.

Communicating globally using network-based tools

E-mail
Electronic Mail. E-mail application allow users to send an electronic message over a network to anyone with an email address and access to a computer system. E-mail address are always in the form of username@domain_name. For example TeachIT@teacher.com
IRC
Internet relay chat. IRC is a messing system that allow users to 'chat' with other people on the Internet using text messages. For example MSN & Yahoo messenger, Google Talk, etc....

Uses of the Internet

Bulletin board
A electronic forum that hosts posted messages and articles related to a common subject. For example Facebook Wall.
Newsgroup
An on-line discussion group or forum specifically focused on a particular area of interest.
Blogging
A blog or web log is a diary maintained by its author on the world wide web.
Podcast
A audio broadcast using the Internet that can be played back on an iPod or similar devices.
E-commerce
The use of the internet for selling goods and services
E-learning
The use of the internet to offer courses over the internet to individual learners.
